Akiba Antiques to Offer Fine Art by Manuel Mendive, Jerzy Nowosielski, and Franjo Filipović

Published July 19th, 2022 by Akiba Galleries

Contemporary Afro-Cuban artist Manuel Mendive builds multidisciplinary links between the past and present. Born in Havana, Mendive has roots in Africa’s West coast and remains connected to his Yoruba heritage. He has dedicated his decades-long career to showing the influence of African culture on the Caribbean region. One of Manuel Mendive’s mixed media paintings, titled Atardecer, will come to auction with Akiba Antiques this July. The piece from 2000 shows multiple amorphous figures dancing and embracing around a red-hued tree. This auction features other notable fine artworks from around the globe, including work by Polish painter Jerzy Nowosielski. Known for his Orthodox iconography, Nowosielski applied a more minimalist palette to the available work. A winter landscape painting by post-war Croatian artist Franjo Filipović is on offer as well.

Beyond fine art, this Blazin’ July auction includes a variety of antique and modern furniture lots. Among them is an Eames Lounge Chair and ottoman designed for Herman Miller. This original piece includes the iconic Brazilian rosewood and comfortable curved plywood shell. Its black leather cushions were reportedly inspired by traditional English club chairs and well-worn baseball mitts. An antique French mahogany and bronze writing desk, a French Empire-style gilt bronze table with a lapis lazuli top, and a three-piece set of medieval Spanish armchairs round out the listings.
