Peter Max (American b. 1937) Mixed Media

Published September 15th, 2016 by Unknown

Featured in our upcoming September 21st auction is this remarkable, certified, original mixed media work by Peter Max, A Jewish German born illustrator. His counter cultural take on classic iconography, such as the Statue of Liberty rendered above, has consistently been criticized one one side of the spectrum, and revered on the other. One thing is for certain, his art work is timeless.

Often seen as a catalyst for the Neo-Expressionist movement, Max painted along border walls, illustrated presidents, monuments, and even hulls of cruise ships. His wild take in pop art is perhaps why we respect him as an artist. From escaping Nazi Germany as an infant, and keeping a sense of wild expressionism in his art rather than a gloomy take which pervades throughout artist from that era, is an aspect to take into consideration when viewing this artist’s illustrations.

DESCRIPTION: A Peter Max mixed media rendering of the head of the Statue of Liberty enveloped with vibrantly colored swirled accents.
